The Challenge

Project PAL combats the “alarmingly poor” (Fleisch, 2008) literacy levels of young R-3 learners in township schools in the Western Cape of South Africa.

The Big Idea

In partnership with a township school, Project PAL implemented teacher-developed, research-based reading curricula and instruction relevant to children’s lives, languages and experiences, conducted ongoing assessments, used innovative technology to create reading materials in multiple languages, and facilitated on-site professional development and internet-based webinars to inspire teachers to create innovative literacy curricula.
