The Challenge
In some regions of Ethiopia, according to the 2010 Early Grade Reading Assessment, a majority of children have 0% comprehension, even at the end of grade 2. Adult literacy rates are less than 36 percent and teachers lack access to basic resource materials. Whiz Kids helps to foster a culture that celebrates learning and literacy for teachers, parents and children by distributing Tsehai on national broadcasts and complementary materials through the school system and teacher’s association.
The Big Idea
Tsehai Loves Learning's innovative pedagogical approach and award-winning television and radio series, Whiz Kids Workshop, seeks to improve mother tongue reading skills and prepare millions of pre-K to Grade 2 Ethiopian students. “Tsehai Loves Learning” television and radio show created 32 episodes, each focusing on one letter of the alphabet. To support the integration of the technology in the classroom, Whiz Kids also developed three supplementary student workbooks and print storybooks.
Results
The TV show was nationally broadcast reaching an estimated five million children.
