Health Crisis - Honorable Mention (tied)
Natural disasters, health crises like Ebola, and country conflicts including the ongoing war in Syria can severely disrupt the delivery and quality of children’s education. Even after the conflict subsides, interruptions in education can have long-term consequences on student enrollment and retention in school, as well as their cognitive, academic and socio-emotional development.
The Big Idea
Using the CommCare platform, Dimagi proposed to partner with organizations to develop a set of free, localizable mobile apps to strengthen the education response to Ebola and other crises. It offers MoE curriculum-aligned apps that complement educational radio programs, pre-positions interactive, “supplemental” apps that children can play at their own pace to make gains in literacy, numeracy, life skills, and access psychosocial support materials; and enable learning outcome measurement.
For rapid deployment and the broadest reach, these applications would be made available indefinitely on the CommCare Exchange, an open-licensed "app store" that allows applications to be shared, modified, and used freely throughout the CommCare community.
