The Challenge
There are pervasive problems with educational data collection including 1) the use of a paper-based system, 2) field data collection requires significant labor, 3) significant labor and expense devoted to redundant manual re-entry of data into electronic database, and 4) data cannot be shared easily with stakeholders and decision makers.
The Big Idea
This project provided a communication platform for the education sector to collect education data and share information using the equipment they already have—a computer, the internet and mobile phones.
Results
In Senegal, HNI assisted the Ministry of Education in collecting standardized testing data for 2nd, 4th and 6th graders in reading and math from 9,500 schools. More than 500 schools have now submitted their data successfully using mobile technology. In Malawi, HNI worked with local reading organizations to modernize their data collection.
