Christopher Kurz, an instructional/support faculty member at RIT’s National Technical Institute for the Deaf, is working with a team to provide access to literacy for deaf children in their own sign languages in the Philippines. The team is one of three finalists in a global literacy competition.

Rochester Institute of Technology's National Technical Institute for the Deaf professor Christopher Kurz demonstrates a sign language storybook on the World Around You platform.

The Challenge

In the targeted regions of Fiji, Indonesia, the Philippines, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Somalia, and other regions around the world, deaf children lack deaf signing models in school settings and often do not have books in their local signed languages.

The Big Idea

Storytelling enables a shared experience among deaf children about the deaf experience. RIT/NTID will create 200 signed books using its Sign On For Literacy prize-funded software, World Around You (WAY). The 200 books will be created in six sign languages (Filipino, Indonesian, Somali, PNG, Fiji and Samoan), for a total of 1,200 books.
