Despite significant participation in the early grades of the South African education system, literacy levels of indigenous language speakers in primary grades remain consistently low in comparison to international and English speaking peers.

This project uses a unique ICT-based, phonics-enriched instructional platform that provides multilingual instruction to South African children in primary schools in Gauteng Province, Johannesburg. It taps the power of computer-based, interactive multimedia (audio and visual), and enables a learner to hear, identify, and manipulate phonemes. It provides a solid, self-managed, and highly motivational way of supporting reading instruction.

Project Reach
120 laptops and 40 tablets were purchased and installed in pilot schools. In addition, 30 new lessons were developed in four languages (Sepedi, Tshivenda, Xitsonga and English), a voice-over for ICT in English and Sepedi was completed, and 480 stories were produced in print and electronic formats.
