The Challenge
Although the enrollment in primary grades and access to school is almost universal in India, the quality of education is a major barrier to achieving learning outcomes. Most children have no access to age appropriate content or reading materials other than textbooks. Teachers do not have adequate capacities for delivering differentiated teaching methodologies and assessments do not measure essential skills such as comprehension and fluency.
The Big Idea
Learning tools were introduced to improve oral reading fluency, teacher capacities was increased to use Galli Galli Sim Sim materials, and engaging and innovative child-based learning materials were provided. In addition, in a sub-set of 50 schools, differential digital learning tools were introduced.
Results
The intervention was in 375 government-run primary schools in 3 districts of Bihar, reaching 750 teachers and 30,000 children. In both schools with the basic Intervention and those with the additional digital intervention, scores for children from Grade 1 and 2 improved across all main outcomes in the program. Overall, the digital intervention performed considerably better than the basic intervention, leading to impressive improvements in task scores.
