All Children Reading: A Grand Challenge for Development (ACR GCD) and The Intel® Learn Program gathered global education experts on International Literacy Day 2015 for a workshop designed to generate innovative ideas for empowering youth to support early grade reading efforts in developing countries.
The workshop, held at and facilitated by the Lab@OPM in Washington, D.C., brought together multiple partners and technical experts in digital literacy, youth workforce development, literacy, and information and communications technologies (ICT). Facilitators challenged participants to think of new strategies for innovative engagement of youth to address literacy challenges in their community using ICT. Following human centered design principles, participants created a problem statement and possible implementation plan.
More than 387 million children around the world cannot read. Youth have the potential to help reverse this statistic, as their high interest in ICT combined with the increasing ubiquity of education technologies present unique opportunities for engaging them in community early grade reading efforts
At the end of the workshop, the group synthesized their strongest ideas. Following the event, ACR GCD invited its community of tech innovators and global education experts to submit feedback on ideas generated.
