Education is a proven factor in reducing poverty–and the ability to read plays a crucial role in a child’s opportunity to attend and complete his or her education. Yet children across the world are waiting for the opportunity to learn to read. Due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and refugee and migration crises, UNESCO reports that the number of children lacking basic reading skills worldwide has grown from 387 million prior to the pandemic to 584 million today.
